How do you identify genuine EM Boehm statuette?
I recently went to an auction and bought two chicken figures. One was a male and the other a woman with three chicks. I just like figures outdoors to my house were almost in perfect condition. When I got home I noticed a piece of paper stuffed in one of them seems to be an advertisement for the goose figurines made by Edward Marshall Boehm Studios and mentioned a price of $ 600 was complemented by a HM Bailey Inc.???? This company apparently closed in 1984. I tried to look at the figures and found similar items on eBay for about $ 600 but all I have does not have the basis that is independent of the figures and I am unable to find any marks to confirm they are authentic Boehm figurines. I'm looking for some brands to identify as Boehm and when brands is. Any help is appreciated??? I only pay $ 6.00 for the couple, so do not be too dissapointed if counterfeits, but I think they are genuine. Boehm's website is of no help.
If your piece is not a true copy, therefore, would have signed somewhere – the custom rather than the bottom of the stand which bears the signature script Boehm, as you've probably seen in the example of the Ebay website http://cgi.ebay.com/Old-Boehm-Porcelain-Bird-Sculpture- Figurine-Signed-MINT_W0QQitemZ200120607576QQihZ010QQcategoryZ66516QQcmdZViewItem Since his work is without basis, there are two possibilities: a) it is an authentic piece, but missing the signature base, thus greatly reducing its value. b) is not authentic never had a base, or a signature. If this is a good copy I fear that only a true expert in china would be able to tell the difference. In any case, just enjoy!
