Folding Picnic Table
Folding Picnic Table
What do you think? Can I give my ladder secure a major boost with a new homemade heavy duty picnic table?
I recently received Gizmo a folding ladder with maximum extension height of 18 '11 "as a gift. It is a grand staircase that really strong and cool and will do almost anything, but I put it in our top 2 story ceiling. The approximately vertical distance from the channel floor is 19 'maybe 20' up in our 2 storey home. I want to know if can or should build a new heavy duty picnic table home 4 'wide and 8' long ladder to reassure my momentum? I would like to prepare the feet of the ladder against 2 2 "x 4" thick in the wide use 4 5 / 8 "screws to prevent slipping or skidding. suppose 2" x 4 "booster leg may need to be near the center of the table to prevent the end of the table overturned.
I do not think it is safe at all. When you are standing at the top of the stairs, the torque applied to the foot of the stairs would be a significant fraction of almost 4000 ft-lbs (20 ft x 150 ~ 200 pounds) – that could easily fall or dump their picnic table homemade. (Not all 4000 lb-ft of torque are applied – which depends on the sine of the angle of the ladder to the vertical.) Drop from a height of 20 feet is likely to break some bones, and possibly worse. My suggestion is to borrow or rent a ladder that is at least 3 or 4 feet higher than the maximum height you need to work. The extra length will give you a secure grip. You should also consider adding a ladder stabilizer on top, to prevent rotation from side to side, and give room to work around windows where necessary. Check out this site for some incredibly dangerous ladder configurations. http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=21716 This is an OSHA booklet on stairs and ladders. http://www.osha.gov/Publications/osha3124.pdf
