You are using cedar wood shavings as bedding red lethal to guinea pigs?
The guinea pig I got for my birthday is showing signs that it is sick. One member of my family told me recently that the use of wood of red cedar is bad for guinea pigs. He said that causes kidney failure. Is this true?
As far as I know, the cedar wood chips do not cause kidney failure, but I know that can cause respiratory problems. Oils of solid cedar and pine make it difficult for small animals to breathe, and long-term exposure can cause serious problems resulting in death. Do not let this scare you if! There are plenty of alternatives to wood shavings. CareFresh I use for my rabbit out of a guinea pig. This product recycled paper that is very safe to use. Most pet stores carry, so I would suggest looking for the next time you are out.
