VISITORS to the giant redwood forests Californias coast stand and gaze in silent wonder. Surrounded by huge trees higher up the blade on top of the canopy, shafts of light slanting through the green roof, you feel small and insignificant. With silence, stillness, light rays so dramatically is defined against shadow of the great forest that surrounds a sense of awe seizes you. Many refer to the giant redwood forests.

Not many refer to giants the jungle of another kind. They are not on the coast, but off the coast of California. They, too, the tower up, spread a canopy, with rays of light entering even in the darkness of his surroundings. There is a silence, a silence, light beams that add an unforgettable beauty in the forest that surrounds and similar feelings of admiration Washing and wonder for you.

This forest has no trees, but the fronds; without trunks, but post no leaves but the leaves, without roots, but holdfasts. This forest is under water. Its fancy name is Macrocystis pyrifera, their only common giant kelp brown and the largest of marine plants and more rapid growth in the world. Visitors to the forest, must have an air with them, so Don diving equipment and wetsuits also to protect against cold the sea. And if you want to take more than memories, which must carry underwater cameras and artificial lighting.

Giant Kelp microscopic begins. The spores attach to rocks up to a hundred meters deep, microscopic seedlings develop in men and women, combining sperm and eggs for produce an embryo. From these sheets embryos grow up, grow down spaghettilike cords. The leaves to reach the surface and sunlight, the glue strings firmly to rocks and anchor plants in place. Haptera Called, these cables into large packages and are called holdfasts.

As the leaves grow, add the leaves with gas filled floats to keep it headed for the sea surface. We must continue to grow, spreading to form dense canopies. Each frond can live only six months, but the new growing from the holdfast. The plant may live all algae for five years or more. It absorbs nutrients throughout its entire structure flexible sheets, post, and holdfasts.

And the leaves grow to two meters per day! They can grow from a hundred yards or more to reach the surface, then add another hundred meters to form the floating deck. Through these floating algae covered the sun's rays penetrate to add an ethereal beauty, another world, in this underwater realm.

The bed is full of algae alive. Scientists say that only a mature algae plant can support more than one million organisms. Some 178 species live in the holdfasts only crabs, sea slugs, brittle stars, worms, and others. In all, an estimated 800 species living in and around a bed of seaweed, used as food, shelter, or hunting. Starfish, anemones, jellyfish, moray eels, and many fish frequent the prairies algae. A very little aggressive the bright orange Garibaldi also distinguished himself as the state marine fish Californias.

At the end of the decade 1950 many of the kelp forests of California were close to extinction. Warmer seas will kill algae, and storms tear loose from their holdfasts, but the main threat was in the sea urchin. It was, as often happens, mans doing. Kelco Companies news release explains:

Sea urchins are creatures Spiney marine holdfasts that feed on algae, leaves and young seedlings. The near annihilation of sea urchins most effective natural enemy, sea otters, hunting large scale in previous years had upset the ecological balance of the seagrass beds. Sea urchins, left free to satisfy their appetite for seaweed began breeding uncontrollably, and devoured large areas of kelp forest. Hedgehogs were recorded as moving up to 30 feet of a month through the beds of seaweed.

But the remedy was also Mans doing. Sea otters became protected, their numbers increased, the decrease in sea urchins kelp forests and are recovering. As Kelco reports: Today, our kelp forests are beginning to near the limits occupied generous ago about sixty years. The ecological balance is being restored, and a natural resource in danger of extinction, once it has been reborn.

And, with this renaissance, divers once again slip through the forests of algae and clicking cameras bring us back to a small part of the glories that are in these forests in the sea.
